More About This Title Coachman

English

"K M Peyton meets Malcolm MacDonald."

Good-looking and ambitious George Davenport travels to London with his bride Lucy, determined to make the most of his skill in driving a four-in-hand of horses. It’s 1838. Queen Victoria is crowned, and England is at peace, but it isn't a good time to be a coachman.

As George finds employment with William Chaplin, the “Napoleon of coaching”, the first railways are about to open across the country. Their competition will kill off the road-coaching trade. George loves both his work and his wife, so he has a lot to come to terms with… even before the boss’s daughter starts to stalk him.

I've been a regular contributor to Carriage Driving Magazine, cartoonist and contributor to the pony magazine Going Native until its closure in 1995, and I still contribute occasionally to its successor Native Pony.

I have had three books published by "proper" publishing houses, One Fell Swoop (twice reprinted), Against the Odds (J A Allen) and Hoofprints in Eden (Hayloft).

Luke Casey and Dales Diary (ITV) interviewed me in 2007 about Hoofprints in Eden and an interview by Dylan Winter for BBC Radio 4's "Rare Steeds" is still available on their web site.

Recently I've also been doing a good deal of editing and proofing work and the penny finally dropped that I could be doing this for my OWN books.

"Sue Millard’s historical novel Coachman (Jackdaw E Books, 2012) will transport you into that world within a few paragraphs. Then it keeps you there, with detail that will have you mentally clutching the edge of your seat or curling your fingers around the reins. ... Coachman’s grip on the reader reflects the care that has gone into its research and writing." The Whip, Feb 2013

"a tale encompassing both the romance and hardship of those times" Carriage Driving Magazine, Dec 2012
