More About This Title Nontoxic Products: Interdisciplinary Approach to Materials Alternative Analysis

English

The textbook presents an interdisciplinary perspective of rationale, methods and applications of alternative assessment as a framework for making decisions regarding less-toxic consumer products.

The book is organized according to three broad themes. The first theme focuses on methodology, including LCA as a tool for generating comparative indicators of chemical and material impacts on human health and environmental quality, and multi-criteria decision analysis approaches to interpret and integrate data spanning different material properties. This section also includes examples of protocols developed by private and public organizations for conducting alternative assessments. The second theme focuses on current national and international chemical regulatory policies that include alternative analysis. These include those Massachusetts and California, the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s Design for the Environment program, European regulations such as REACH and the United Nation’s Environment Program’s POPs treaty. The third section focuses on case studies of chemicals in consumer products that have been subjected to ad hoc or systematic alternative assessment, including BPA and phthalates in plastics, lead in gasoline, paint electronics, and brominated flame retardants in furniture, electronics, and other products.
