Richly illustrated throughout, each chapter includes an overview, detailed examples, summary points, references, and callout boxes highlighting methods and cutting-edge technology. The appendix provides a useful list of related Web sites. Some of the subjects reviewed within Principles of Nuclear Structure and Function include:
* Nuclear structure, replication, damage, and repair
* Regulation of gene expression
* The cell cycle
* Meiosis and recombination
This timely volume presents functional studies within their proper structural context and is an informative profile of the cell and molecular biology in nuclei and chromatin. For those studying cell biology, along with molecular and cell biologists, geneticists, and reproductive biologists, Principles of Nuclear Structure and Function is a definitive resource.

Peter Cook received his doctorate at The University of Oxford. As a Professor of Cell Biology at the University of Oxford and a Senior Research Fellow of Brasenose College, he teaches students of biology and medicine. His research interests include the analysis of the way chromosome structure influences gene activity. He is currently combining the techniques of molecular biology with those of high-resolution imaging to map active sites of replication and transcription within three-dimensional nuclear space. These studies have led to the surprising finding that active genes are not spread diffusely throughout the nucleus; rather, they are concentrated in discrete sites or 'factories' where the appropriate molecular machines (ie the DNA and RNA polymerases) are concentrated.

"Cook's writing is clear, light and at times colloquial, but always exquisitely accurate[...]easy to read and[...]approachable[...]It is an essential book." (Tom Misteli, National Cabcer Institute, NIH (in Journal of Cell Science)
"Peter Cook has written an important book.... It is an essential book." (Journal of Cell Science, Vol. 114, Part 19)
"This book would be very useful for graduate students or postgraduate students entering a field of study related to the nucleus...could also serve as a fine textbook..."(Doody's Health Services) I liked both the content and the layout of the book. It will be valuable to both the novice and the expert and may serve well as a text for focused graduate classes.--Gwen V. Childs, Ph.D., University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, AR
Peter Cook presents an eloquent arguement for considering nuclear events from the holistic viewpoint of the particular structures and factories within which the events of transcription, recombination,replication and repair occur. This is a contemporary and well -informed perspective by a thought leader in this reasearch area, and provides a welcome contrast with the more reductionist views presented in most textbooks on this topic.--Alan Wolffe, Sangamo BioSciences, Richmond, California
