Born into a middle-class family in Singapore during the tumultuous times when the World War II just began, by a twist of fate, the writer was thrust into the world to face the harsh realities of life at the age of 4 when his father died in a fatal accident. His moving childhood recollections reflect, among other things, the untold miseries of living in poverty, encounters with ghosts, cheating cases involving siblings over money and love, suicide attempts, strange dreams, an early discovery of sex, a taste of gangsterism, and an instant miracle through Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.
