Patricia Komar

In a small village in British Columbia, surrounded by picturesque mountains and fields of blueberries, corn and grasses, Patricia Komar weaves storylines through the many landscapes she has explored, from the Colorado and Canadian Rockies to the severe hiking trails of the Swiss Alps, and finally to the serene bays of the San Juan Islands where she meanders in her canoe and kayak.
Writing doesn’t always take place in front of a computer according to Patricia. Creating a story often takes place out in the field. Patricia began her freelance career as a feature writer for a North American magazine. Her first article, Can You Dig It? Earthdogging: The Coolest Activity You’ve Never Heard Of! required that Patricia first experience the sport where earthdogs go to ground navigating underground tunnels to rid farmer’s fields of vermin, such as rats, river otters and the like. No, Patricia didn’t need to burrow underground, but she did indeed enter her own dog, Tabu, a cairn Terrier, in the trials. Then she wrote the article and followed with another canine sport article: Running Naked: Agility in Action. When her new border Collie continuously nipped at her heels, Patricia went into research mode and flushed out a new article, Herding: Under the Watchful Eye of the ‘Strong Eyed’ Dog. Her close encounter with a relentless coyote in the darkness of early morning led her to write Shadowed by a Coyote.
When asked to write Geocaching: The 21st century hunt for treasure, Patricia applied research skills acquired in Universities in New York, British Columbia, Chicago and Switzerland, however, she says, “First, I purchased a hi-tech, hand-held GPS device, learned how to use it, then researched the history and finally dove into the fields, forests, and beaches, geocaching from Colorado to British Columbia to the Alps in Switzerland.” While in the Swiss Alps studying at the European Graduate School, Patricia traveled to the hospice where monks and St. Bernard dogs saved many from the white death of snowy blizzards while crossing over the Italian-Swiss Pass, and then wrote The Grand Saint Bernard Pass.

Patricia’s book Jobmobbers: Under the Watchful Eye of the Coyote followed her coyote article however, the coyote, commonly known as the trickster, is portrayed metaphorically as one who knows the way, a protector of sorts, one who watches over helping the protagonist to shift, adapt to, and survive bullying in the workplace by turning the bullies against themselves and then the protagonist, Dawn, walks away from the kill before beginning a new adventure.

Patricia’s new release, Diary of a Teen Explorer, book three of the Hollow Hills Explorer’s Series features the personal writings of Faith, the protagonist. The focus is on teen bullying, friendship, time travel, other dimensions and mysterious adventures. The action takes you alongside the explorers and their dogs as they learn canine tracking skills, and then sniff out the trail of a missing teen runaway. For this book, once again, Patricia went into researching then out into the field to learn the art of tracking. Not only did she write the book, but she sniffed out another of her articles: The Nose Knows: On the trail of tracking dogs.

When asked if any new books were on the horizon, Patricia replied, “Yes, absolutely. I’m presently creating a new storyline. Later today when hiking the trails, I’ll be on the lookout for evidence left behind by my newly character. I won’t reveal anything more about this character until the book is released. Only the Hollow Hill Explorers Club members are privy to this information.”

Patricia finishes by sharing with me, “My favorite writing teacher, Daniel Wood, British Columbia’s top writer of magazine articles taught me that writing begins with an idea, you think about it, research it, get out in the field, gather information, interview. Now you begin writing the story, living the story, dreaming the story, the story becomes a part of you – then – “the story starts telling itself to you. You are now a vehicle for that which has captivated you”. And that is how I write.”
