More About This Title Upton House and Gardens

Get a taste of country house life as you step into the home of a 1930s' millionaire with internationally important works by artists such as Hogarth, Stubbs, Canaletto, Brueghel, and El Greco. Lord Bearsted's extensive porcelain collection includes 18th-century Sevres porcelain, Chelsea, and Derby figures. Upton has all the elements of a millionaire's country home—with swimming pool, squash court, and a glamorous Art Deco interior in Lady Bearsted's bathroom. The garden planting was principally designed by Kitty Lloyd-Jones with Lady Bearsted in the 1930s. The sweeping lawn gives way to a dramatic series of terraces and herbaceous borders, which descend to a kitchen garden and tranquil water garden. Upton is also home to the National Collection of Asters.

Alan Powers is a Professor in Architecture and Cultural History at the University of Greenwich. Heather Aston works as the Head Gardener at Upton House and Gardens. Simon Murray was the Property Manager at Upton House.
