He is a retired chief judge of the superior court of the District of Columbia having served as a judge for 25 years, 14 of which he served in judicial leadership positions which included the presiding judge of the court's domestic violence unit and FamilyCourt and as member of the dc court's governing body known as the joint committee on judicial administration. Prior to his judicial career he served as a federal prosecutor in the District of Columbia. During his legal career he served as an adjunct professor in two law schools in the District of Columbia. He was born and raised in the District of Columbia where he currently lives.
