Godknows Boladei Igali
Godknows Boladei Igali was born in Oporoma, Bayelsa State, Nigeria on 4th April, 1960. He is a seasoned diplomat, technocrat and administrator with over thirty-two years working experience in the public service. He holds a Ph.D in Political and International Studies from University of Venezuela, Masters in International Law and Diplomacy from University of Lagos, and B.A. (Hons) in History from University of Port Harcourt. He also obtained a Post Graduate Diploma from the Diplomatic Academy, Islamabad, Pakistan and studied at the Foreign Service Academy, as well as Bible Faith Training Centre both in Lagos. He started his working career as a Foreign Affairs Officer with the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1982 and rose to the level of an Ambassador. He had served in different parts of the world as a Diplomat where he exhibited exemplary commitment, creativity and selflessness in achieving targeted goals in the Nigeria’s foreign policy. His hard work went unnoticed as he was appointed to serve as secretary to several committees of the Federal Government. He was later appointed as the Consul General of Nigeria to Cameroon between 1999 to 2005 where he played a major role in the peace effort between Nigeria and Cameroon on the disputed Bakassi Peninsula. He also organised and carried out the return of over 100,000 Nigerians who were displaced as a result of crisis in the North-East, North-Central and Bakassi. After his return to Nigeria in 2005, he was appointed as Special Assistant (Special Duties) in the Presidential Villa, where he also served as Secretary to the Presidential Committee on Money Laundering and Financial Crimes and Committee on Revision of the Public Rules 2005. In 2006, he was appointed as Secretary to Government of Bayelsa State under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR. This, he combined with appointment as the Honorary Adviser and Chief Negotiator to President Olusegun Obasanjo on Niger Delta Matters, where he formulated a lot of policies that culminated in the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme. He lately served as the Nigerian Ambassador to the Nordic Countries of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland between 2008 to 2010, where he was dedicated to the issues of Investment, Environment and Climate Change. Amb. Igali was appointed as Federal Permanent Secretary to Federal Ministry of Water Resources in May 2010. He was redeployed to Federal Ministry of Power in March, 2013. He was awarded Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2006 by President Olusegun Obasanjo, and was recently inducted as a Fellow of Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologists and Historical Society of Nigeria. In 2012, he was honoured by the University of Port Harcourt as the eminent lecturer at its 1st Founders Day Lectures and is the Chairman, Governing Board of the University’s Institute of Natural Resources, Environment and Sustainable Development (INRES). He is an avid environmentalist, a devout Christian and a philanthropist, and sits on the board of several national and international charities and academic institutions. Amb. Igali is also a well published author and his books include: Nigeria’s Economic Diplomacy; Nigeria’s Vision 2010 Programme; Virtuous within the Vile: integrity and Godliness in Public Service; Global Trends in State Formation; Perspectives on Nation State Formation in Contemporary Africa; Signposts to Success; The Diplomacy of Economic Development; and The Truth of God’s Blessing. He plays Golf at his leisure. He is married to Mrs. Tokoni Igali with five children.
