More About This Title Inside and Outside the Wall: Culture of Ancient Chinese Prisons
Briefly but systematically, this book introduces the historical development of prisons in China for about 4000 years from the Xia Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty in the form of illustrations and makes evaluations objectively on ancient Chinese prison culture. This book is divided into 10 parts, accordingly as the origin of the prison, different names of the prison, ancient punishments, managements of the prisons, introductions of instruments of torture, relevant laws in ancient China, the prison guards, worship for the god of prison, architectures of prison and prison system reform in the late Qing Dynasty.
Ma Weiguo is director of penology research for the China Association of Prison Work as well as the director of the Institution of Prison Work in Zhejiang province.
