More About This Title Selamat Tinggal Mitos, Selamat Datang Realitas: Esai-esai Budaya dan Politik Kuntowijoyo

English

Kontowijoyo is known as an academic, writer, activist, columnist, author, preacher all at once. He is a professor of history at the University of Gadjah Mada, who has written many novels, anthology of poetry, author of the some academic book.

In this book, once again Kuntowijoyo demonstrated his sharp analysis on recent developments in the politics and culture of the country. By staying aware that reality has its own dynamics and laws which are often not easily defined, Kuntowijoyo keeps reminding us how important it is to prepare some sort systematic and planned cultural agenda.

One of the strategy is demythologizing Indonesian society. Kuntowijoyo shows some evidence that Indonesian people lived and driven by the myths-- myth of the Messiah on Sukarno, myth of Suharto as the Father of Development, myth of Technological Advancement on Habibie, of myth National Unifying on KH Abdurrahman Wahid, myth of The Victims on PDI-P, to the cargo cult myths on separatist movements in Aceh, Papua and Riau. Demythologizing, he said, can be done with at least four approaches: introducing science, purification of religion, introducing historical consciousness, and through the arts. This book is a must read for anyone wanting to know not only "what is it with Indonesia", and also "what Indonesia wants".
