More About This Title What Flag Do You Fly?

English

This is a book about flags. More to the point, it’s a book about the fascinating stories that lie behind the flags that fly all over the world. And what stories! Flags—if you know where to look—filled with history, geography, economy, and culture as well as the singular encounters, coincidences, relationships and conflicts that define the nations over which those flags fly. Some examples: the star on the flag of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a reminder of what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once called the greatest crime against humanity; the eagle on Mexico’s flag recalls the Aztec sacrifice to their gods of the daughter of a rival tribal leader. And those stars on the flag of Tuvalu? Those recall a gripping historical incident that define the tiny island nation.

Dmytro Dubilet is known to the public as a banker, start-up success story, former Ukrainian Cabinet minister, blogger and focus of Timur Vorona’s «Dmytro Dubilet. Business is Common Sense. 50 Ways to Get Where You’re Going”. He’s also somewhat fanatical on the subject of national flags. Dmytro’s interest in flags first caught fire in childhood. While in pursuit of his avocation one question would not give him any rest: Why does the only information available on flags and their histories read like dry-as-dust encyclopaedia entries? So, he decided to do something about that. He began taking notes, which in time turned into posts about flags on his blog, and finally he created a dedicated Telegram channel – Flags with Dmytro Dubilet. Positive follower response spurred Dmytro on—the impetus to author
a book on the subject was building. And then Covid locked us all down and Ukrainians, like people living under so many different flags in so many different parts of the world, found themselves with time to burn. Time Dmytro used to write his book. This is Dmytro’s first book and surely not his last. As it turns out, he finds authoring a book as much of a blast
as launching a mobile banking app.
