More About This Title Black Barbies

This book is about the life of a little black girl, Selina, whose mother works for a wealthy family as a domestic helper. Lynette, the mother in the wealthy white family, manages to help Selina get into a private Afrikaans school so she can get a better education. Herein lies some of the challenges: the different cultures and upbringing, Selina going to a school that is ‘fancy’ (is she now betraying her own by being ‘la-di-da’), the problems Selina has to deal with (leaving her grandmother behind and her friend’s teenage pregnancy – is school better than to have a boyfriend?). In essence this title addresses themes of a multicultural society that navigates through life within different class systems, relationships, social stigmas and the reality of living with AIDS. This book can also suit the teen market.

The young and vibrant Bernette is an advocate by day but indulges in her creativity by being a popular Afrikaans chick-lit writer. Although still young, several very popular titles have been produced by her pen, including Als oor kop, Lam in wolfsklere, Viva la vida and Stiletto’s van staal. Stiletto’s van staal was nominated for the ATKV Prize for romance in 2013, and she has been nominated for the romance prize for one of her Romanza titles Glansheld en die koerantprinses. Using her own life experiences, she is now delving into the more serious genre of novel writing, exploring the themes of race, classism, poverty and different cultures.

This book is regarded as a great escape out of the pen of popular local author Bernette Bergenthuin. This novel is packed with intrigue as it follows three hot-blooded Beauman sisters, Lona, Vanessa and Sienna, each named after a city in Europe. Readers can easily identify with these colourful characters and within the first few pages effortlessly step into their cheeky shoes.” – Natasha Slabbert, BooksLive (re 'Stiletto’s van Staal).
