More About This Title Romans

New in the Eerdmans Classic Biblical Commentary Collection

First published in 1985, this book offers an accessible, nontechnical abridgement of C. E. B. Cranfield’s magisterial two-volume International Critical Commentary on Romans—which N. T. Wright once called “the finest work on Romans to appear this century” and F. F. Bruce hailed as “well worthy to take its place alongside the really great commentaries on Romans.”

Following a brief introduction, Cranfield provides section-by section and verse-by-verse commentary on Romans, based on his own translation.

C. E. B. Cranfield (1915–2015) served as an army chaplain in World War II, as a pastor to prisoners of war, and as a minister before teaching theology for thirty years at the University of Durham (1950–1980). He is also the author of well-received commentaries on Mark and 1 and 2 Peter and Jude.

— Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society
“For those who desire the essence of Cranfield’s contribution to our understanding of Romans, the abridgement is an excellent resource. His efforts will stand as one of the major attempts in this century to understand Paul’s message.”
