Suddenly, the cows began to paw at the ground, and the horses began trotting nervously and whinnying. The next thing Sagebrush and the Young Miss knew, a herd of deer came running out of the forest, straight past Sagebrush and the Young Miss. "Fire!" the big-antlered buck screamed as ran across the lawn where the little mountain cabin set. "Run for your lives! The woods are on fire!" he screamed. The Young Miss had heard that animals in the forest have an alert system to communicate with when danger looms. The Young Miss look wide-eyed at Sagebrush. "Go wake up your parents, Sagebrush. Hurry we have to act fast!" Sagebrush turned toward the cabin and began running as fast as she could to let Ginger and Maverick -her parents, the house dogs - know of the imminent danger.

Encouraging stewardship as well as kindness, this picture book includes a worthy, timeless call to remember that nature and humanity are inextricably bound. – Foreword Reviews These illustrations, along with the skill of wordsmith Joni Franks create this engaging children’s story, making this episode of Tales of Tailless Dog Names Sagebrush to once again become an excellent addition to any youngster’s library. For a puppy without a tail, Sagebrush now has two published tales, and looks as if there are more to come. - Pacific Book Review The author writes in order to motivate others to join her in her quest to end deforestation and conserve the Earth’s precious gifts. Franks uses this story, inspired by the actual Hayden Pass Fire of Colorado in 2016, to teach new generations how important it is to respect the environment and use safety measures at all times to prevent natural disasters from happening. She also demonstrates how something good can come from bad circumstances by incorporating her fascinating character Juniper, the Shun. Although Juniper was orphaned due to deforestation, she finds a wonderful new home on the ranch with Young Miss and others of her kind during this devastating event. – US Review of Books
