Based on an international conference held in New Zealand in 2004, the essays in this book seek to answer why the Pacific has experienced growing levels of conflict and political instability in recent years, what has been the impact on Pacific peoples, and what can be done to avoid further conflict. Topics covered include: causes of conflict, ending conflict, post-conflict resolution, terrorism 'threats', prospects for regionalism and environmental security.


John Henderson is Associate Professor in the School of Political Science and Communication. His teaching and research interests focus on New Zealand and Pacific Island politics and international relations. Greg Watson studied politics at the University of Canterbury, NZ, then at the University of Tehran. His research interests include political psychology, Political Sociology and Pacific and Middle East politics.
