This is the first book-length study of New Zealand's post-colonial literary culture, beginning with economic, social and cultural changes that occured after 1970, then moving back to the 19th century and the formation of Europeans' relationship with Maori.


Professor Patrick Evans has studied and taught NZ literature at the University of Canterbury since 1978. He has published two novels, prize-winning essays and short fiction, and has had plays performed in NZ and Australia.
