Dedicated to bettering the lives of women and girls throughout the world, Soroptimist International also offers its membership participation in a worldwide community of sisterhood. The organization has nearly 95,000 members in 120 countries and territories. All volunteer their time, energy, and financial support to projects that heal and support women and girls, and inspire them to live their dreams. Soroptimist has been translated as best for women, which is exactly what the organization strives to achieve, though it might be even better translated as sisters of the greatest good. Soroptimists are women at their best, working to help other women to be their best. Soroptimist members belong to local clubs, which undertake projects that range from renovating domestic violence shelters and providing mammograms to low-income women, to sponsoring self-esteem workshops for teenage girls, to providing scholarships that offer empowerment through education. Soroptimists also participate in organization-wide programs devoted to vocational guidance, environmental issues, and putting an end to human trafficking.
