Story Summary

Abigail was not like any other girl on earth. She was shy, introverted, lacked confidence in meeting new friends, but she had something most kids only wondered about: an unstoppable faith. Of course, it wasn’t always that way. When some police officers spread some untrue rumors about her family, her dad couldn’t take the pain, and one night while she was sleeping, he up and left in the middle of the night–– abandoning both Abigail and her mom. No amount of her tears brought him back either. Every night, Abigail asked God to watch over her dad, eventually, in time she realized he was never coming back. Abigail was just rebuilding her faith when her mom’s health declined, she became deathly ill and almost died. Once again, her life was tilted on its side, this time forcing them to move to a new town, known as Med-City, where her mom could seek the medical attention she needed, and from the best hospital in the world. Abigail’s only close friend in her ten years of life was her four-pound Chihuahua. Besides her mom, she was the only friend she had to confide in.

Abigail called her dog Valentine, because she was most adorable, cuddly dog she could ever have know, she was the love of her life who was always there with for Abigail. Valentine was there when Abigail needed some one to hold, somewhere to cry, and spill her tears into the two black hearts on Valentine’s back just seemed like they were put there for her to find. They may have represented the two deepest, darkest hurts of her past, but at least they were always there, reminding her God loved her so much that he gave her a dog wearing hearts on the outside.

Filled with the Lord inside her own heart, Abigail prayed for Jesus to heal her sick mom, teach her ways to help her more, she prayed their new neighbors would be nice, and the police wouldn’t treat them like before and hurt them by saying untrue things, and if it were possible, would He send her a friend?

The next day, her prayer was answered when a new neighbor showed up, not just any neighbor, but she was the girl she saw at the school orientation, the most popular girl in school. Abigail almost fainted when the new girl, Jess, invited her to sign her dog up for Saliva Smirk’s Summer Camp for Dogs!

Jess entered Abigail’s life, befriending her for the sole purpose of leaving no stone unturned, in her quest to gather Abigail’s’ deepest secrets, share them with all the neighbors, on the news and throughout the school, and if luck were on her side––which it always was, force her and her lower class family to move out of their upper class neighborhood. Coming up with the idea for a dog summer camp was the most brilliant thing she’d thought of in years.

By the time Abigail realizes Saliva Smirk’s Summer Camp for Dogs was created as a joke on her, and Jess was never really her real friend. She only pretended to be to gather her secrets, and to find out how someone like her had the money to live in her neighborhood. By the time Abigail realizes what Jess has set up––against her, she has nowhere to run. All her escape routes lead her straight back into the painful past she’d just moved away from. In the most pivotal moment in her life she has to find the strength inside, believe and trust God will give her the strength to face the hecklers, and the Jess the bully head on. (less)
