"DONALD L. BALL, who retired in 1995, after teaching math to seventh, eighth, and ninth graders, in Pomona, for 38 years, was born in the small oil field town of Cromwell, Oklahoma. He grew up in oil field towns in the state and graduated from Oklahoma State University and Pepperdine University in California. His writing career started with high school and college course work assignments, which were interrupted after graduation by a stint in the Navy during the Korean War. Most of his Navy career was spent on the East Coast and North Atlantic. He was the engineering officer on a destroyer escort radar picket ship assigned to the seaward extension of the DEW line. He has written short stories and poems and now a book of memoirs entitled, ?Hopscotch.? The title comes from his many travels and moves in his life associated with oil field work begun by his parents, and by the Navy. His life-time interest and hobby has been sailing, starting with his first boat at age fourteen and continues to the present time. He doesn?t sail much now, but he still writes and enjoys telling stories of his sailing days. He lives with, Elaine, his wife of 60 years and is the proud parent of three children who are grown and have families of their own."
