Self-Publishing
July 21, 2009 02:19PM
One of the biggest fears of authors is how to publicize their book or their article. The best way to promote your book is to put up on sale where interested readers come around. It is important that you run a small display with a good head line and provide a sales copy to any of the publishing agency online and offline like pubmatch.org. Here you will establish contacts with readers and potential authors. This will help you self publicize your book online.

I have been forced to self-publish owing to the dearth of agencies and publishers willing to pick up new titles. You can see my books on this site and can order them through www.antellus.com. I use Lulu as my printer. The quality of the books is on a par with most major publishers. I see no difficulty in marketing them, but sales have been slow because of the current economy. I also participate in several social networks so there is coverage. You may also see them on Amazon in the next few months.

Lulu.com seems to be a very good resource, I am going to talk to them about publishing my books as well.

Another interesting service I am waiting to use after my book gets published is www.readhowyouwant.com

At PubMatch.org you will get to know publishers who will do all the marketing for their authors' books. However, with Lulu the burden of selling and marketing books falls to the author. Hence I prefer PubMatch.org over lulu.

Before self publishing your work you must understand few things like what exactly is your book about, what kind of audience your book will target, and why your readers should read your book. Thus before publishing you must put up a copy of your work for readers review on any of the popular online portal. PubMatch.org is a good example where you can list and get good free tips on how to improve your work if any.

I have a suggestion for your problem of self publishing, as I have solved this problem long ago. If you are self publishing your copy, you must first get copyrights for your work, after getting copyright it is significant to get international standard book number for your book. Contact a publishing agency like Pubmatch.org, this is the place where you’ll get loads of agents working as a distributer and professional publicist, theses agents will manage your marketing campaigns.

It is important that your work must establish connection with readers, to help find out how your work is; you can submit a copy or a part of your copy to online book agency. This will help you get review where you can make changes and then opt for international standard book number. These are some of the steps that you can take before self publishing your work.

If you are an illustrator, it is significant for you to specifically mention your work. What kind of tools you have used and what techniques you are using, mention and send it to any online illustrating bureau. I’m sure you will get competent suggestions that will benefit you, for the potential publication of your work.

It is better to investigate different online publishing programs that can automatically deliver your work to potential readers. Ensure that these online publishing bureaus provide assistance at a reasonable price.

So far no response from this site. I have removed the books because I own all the rights. You can see my work on my site: [www.antellus.com]. I am launching a series of audiobooks so I will be very busy in the next few months.

I suggest that there are many, many problems with self-publishing. The most important has been mentioned already: who's going to market and sell the book? To be successful you need to have links with the major retailers - and major retailers usually want nothing to do with self-published authors.

The second problem with self-publishing is that it doesn't really make financial sense. To use "print on demand" providers you have to pay a cost per unit that is several times greater than would be paid by an established publisher for a print run. To avoid a loss, self-publishers have to price their book higher than the competition and still settle for a smaller margin. The higher price means that the chances of selling large numbers of copies are even lower.

A professional publisher can market and sell books effectively at a low price and a (reasonably) high margin. To make things better, virtually all need a steady stream of manuscript submissions. Some openly look for them (like us - visit Knightstone Publishing to find out more) and even those that claim, "no unsollicited manuscripts" still need a steady stream of new talent. The best way to get published by this sort of firm is through the services of a good agent.
