EUROPE IN CYPRIOT ESSAY WRITING

By Panos Ioannides (ed.)

This volume contains five essays which were written by leading Cypriot essayists during the last sixty years. The oldest chronologically, “Return from Utopia”, is the IXth chapter of the work The Ordeal of the Intellect by Emilios Hourmouzios and was first published in 1950, while the most recent, “Literature in Exile – The Price of Gyarus”, was presented by Andreas Pastellas at an international conference which took place in Rome in 1997. The other three essays in the volme are a text by Yiorgos Philippou-Pierides on Feodor Michailovich Dostoevsky and his age, taken from his book Four Literary Topics, the essay “The Cursed Poets “ by Andreas Christofides, which is included in the book Issue and Opinions III, Nicosia 1973, and finally “Jean Blot: The Holy Mountain”, by Klitos Ioannides, which was presented at an international seminar at Würzburg, Germany, in the mid 1990s.
