For a samurai life as an exile is a living death. In time he finds life becomes pleasant, only to be struck by tragedy yet again. He befriends a shipwrecked Englishman and breaks the laws of exile by journeying to Edo where he meets the beautiful and mysterious Lady Tokiko. Putting his life at risk he travels to Kyushu, falls in love and is embroiled in the Shimabara rebellion, barely escaping with his life. He conspires with rebel exiles to remove the new daimyo of Izu. Caught in a plot to kill the Shogun he is torn between love and duty, and again breaks the rules of exile to avenge his boyhood friend. His bushido spirit overcomes the many challenges that beset him, until it seems he can enjoy life once again. Or can he?
